Background of the study
Hausa news content is pivotal in keeping the public informed and engaged in Kano, where Hausa is widely spoken. Translating news content accurately requires handling technical terminology, idiomatic expressions, and cultural references that are unique to the region (Bello, 2023). The translation process must balance speed with accuracy, particularly in the fast-paced environment of news production. Challenges arise when automated translation tools are used without sufficient human oversight, leading to literal translations that may misrepresent nuanced news narratives (Garba, 2024). Moreover, inconsistent translation standards and varying levels of translator expertise contribute to discrepancies in the quality of translated news content. This study evaluates the challenges encountered in translating Hausa news content in Kano by analyzing news broadcasts, print media, and online articles. It includes feedback from professional translators and news editors to pinpoint common errors and propose improvements that enhance overall translation accuracy and consistency.

Statement of the problem
Despite advancements in translation technology, Hausa news content in Kano frequently suffers from translation errors that compromise the accuracy and clarity of information (Bello, 2023). Issues such as literal translations, misinterpretation of idioms, and inconsistent use of technical vocabulary can distort the intended message and misinform audiences (Garba, 2024). This study seeks to identify these challenges and assess their impact on news dissemination, aiming to propose standardized approaches that ensure reliable and contextually accurate translations.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the translation quality of Hausa news content.
  2. To identify key challenges affecting translation accuracy.
  3. To recommend standardized practices for improved translations.

Research questions:

  1. What are the common translation errors in Hausa news content?
  2. How do these errors affect audience understanding?
  3. What measures can standardize translation practices?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses translation challenges in Hausa news content, with implications for improving public communication and information accuracy. The findings will benefit news organizations, translators, and policymakers by establishing best practices for translation that enhance clarity and reliability in the dissemination of news (Bello, 2023; Garba, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to translation challenges in Hausa news content in Kano and does not extend to other media or languages.

Definitions of terms:

  • Translation challenges: Difficulties encountered in accurately rendering text from one language to another.
  • Hausa news content: Journalistic material produced in the Hausa language.
